DLP vs. LED in courtside digital press tables

SignCoEDS is strongly recommending DLP courtside tables, as opposed to LED tables.  While we have provided 10mm LED scorer’s tables and marketing tables into NCAA schools, our extensive experience in the courtside display market has shown us that DLP is a superior display technology for close-up viewing.

DLP is the clear choice for clients who demand excellent image quality and performance in proven and reliable products.  SignCoEDS has deployed DLP in courtside applications for over 4 years with a great record of performance.  This year the second generation of DLP systems has been released, and offers significant performance improvements over the previous model.  While there are many applications in the arena where LED is an excellent solution, the close up viewing angles of the scorer’s table makes the full HD resolution of the DLP units a far superior choice.

Feature

10 MM LED

HD DLP

Advantage

Resolution (Pixel Pitch)

(10 MM)

1920 x 1080P (.58 MM)

DLP is 17 times  the resolution of 10 MM LED which results in incredible image quality in both close up and full court camera angles.  The DLP system is capable of full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and never appears pixilated during close ups.

No court reflection/glare

No

Yes

The LED system results in significant glare on the court surface which detracts from the image quality of the system.

Ability to run at full brightness

No

Yes

The 2,000 NIT LED system is typically run at 50% brightness which decreases the color performance and results in reduced image quality.

Impact resistant/safety surface

No

Yes

The DLP system has a custom rigid screen that is strong enough to withstand impact but soft enough to prevent player injury during collisions.  The LED system has very hard, very sharp surfaces.

Environmentally Friendly

No

Yes

The DLP system runs on standard power outlets and consumes less than 170 watts creating far less heat and consuming far less power than 10 MM LED.  The LED system consumes 5 times the power as DLP.

Short Repair Time

No

Yes

The DLP system has a far quicker repair time using simple easy to replace modules.  In addition the units can be serviced from the front or rear.

Integrated automatic color balancing

No

Yes

The SI-FI system allows for automatic color balancing of the system in less than 2 minutes.  This results in consistent color performance between displays.

Many DLP courtside tables currently installed in the market are Margay I's. This is the older technology.  Many of these tables are still in use and have gone years without even basic maintenance, which accounts for mismatched modules and dim tables. Basic maintenance from a knowledgeable provider like SignCoEDS would have kept those systems looking well, and with the improvements the Margay II brings, when coupled with proper annual maintenance, would ensure a beautiful display for years to come.

This table shows the superior brightness, lamp life, increased color range, and increased uniformity of the new Margay II. The dim edges so often noted with the original Margays are not present in the new Margay II.
